Terra Nova follows an ordinary family on an incredible journey back in time to prehistoric Earth as a small part of a daring experiment to save the human race. In the year 2149, the world is dying. The planet is overdeveloped and overcrowded, with the majority of plant and animal life extinct. The future of mankind is in doubt, and its only hope for survival is in the distant past. When scientists at the FERMI Particle Accelerator unexpectedly discovered a fracture in time that made it possible to construct a portal into primeval history, the bold notion was born to resettle humanity in the past--a second chance to rebuild civilisation and get it right this time. The series centres on the Shannon family as they join the Tenth Pilgrimage of settlers to Terra Nova, the first colony established in this beautiful yet forbidding land. Jim Shannon (Jason O’Mara), a devoted father with a checkered past, guides his family through this new world of limitless beauty, mystery and terror. Episode List: Genesis (Part 1) Genesis (Part 2) Instinct What Remains The Runaway Bylaw Nightfall Proof Vs. Now You See Me Within Occupation Resistance (extended finale--never before seen on TV)  There's no lack of investment, ambition and scale on display in Terra Nova. Backed by Steven Spielberg, the premise of the show sends a family back to prehistoric times, on a mission to rescue the human race. It's not a new idea: change the past to affect the future. What lifts Terra Nova, though, is its commitment to bringing a blockbuster style to the small screen. From the visually stunning first episode, it's clear there's been a commitment to get the look and feel of Terra Nova just right. It's a compelling world that's created, and the family in the midst of it, led by Jason O'Mara's Jim Shannon, have a real battle on their hands. It is the human side that sometimes lets the side down a little, with the weaker moments of Terra Nova coming when some of the storylines feel like retreads of different shows. But it really comes together by the end of the season run, and there are some terrific episodes here. One of the bonuses of the disc set, too, is to see a previously-unscreened extended version of the last ever episode of the show. You also, though, get a special director's diary feature, and an assortment of behind the scenes featurettes on the four-disc set. It's an interesting, muddled show, certainly, but Terra Nova still has enough moments to warrant watching. --Jon Foster
