DOUBLE CD SET - CLASSIC BROADCAST RECORDING FROM THE USE YOUR ILLUSION TOUR 1991 Although 1991 marked the beginning of Guns N Roses rise to international fame, it was also the catalyst for a period of great transition and, ultimately, great turmoil. Drummer Steve Adler had been fired on 11th July 1990 following his failure his kick his cocaine and heroin habits and he was replaced by Matt Sorum, formerly of The Cult and - alongside newly-acquired keyboard player Dizzy Reed - Johnny Crash. Gone too was manager Alan Niven, forced out by Axl Rose against the wishes of other members, and replaced by Doug Goldstein in May 91. The new album recording sessions, however, were somewhat more successful. Having enough material to complete two records, Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II were released simultaneously on 17th September, and they debuted at No. 2 and No. 1 in the charts respectively, making Guns the first and only band to have done so at that point - a record they held for another 13 years. The albums sold over 1,500,000 copies combined in their first week, and remained in the charts for over two years. Starting on 9th May 1991, Guns N Roses embarked on a mammoth 28-month tour to support the albums, performing 194 dates in 27 countries, and attracting over seven million fans. Referred to as the longest tour in rock history, it too was a great financial and commercial success, But the Use Your Illusion Tour would become just as well known for the various unusual and/or controversial incidents that occurred along the way, mostly instigated by the bad-boy behaviour of Axl Rose. These included the sparking of crowd riots in St. Louis and Montreal, setting fire to James Hetfield of Metallica due to a pyrotechnics mishap, being caught-up in a failed military coup in Venezuela, and a bizarre yet surprisingly beneficial occurrence in Bogot, Columbia, which saw a light shower fall for the duration of November Rain, only, leading to the song being No. 1 in Columbia for 60 weeks. This double CD set, recorded at the Deer Creek Music Center in Noblesville, Indiana, on 28th May 1991, captures a staggering performance from the band in the early stage of the tour. Playing over two hours in total, and clearly energised after just a handful of US warm-up dates, the show is packed with old and new classics alike, including November Rain, Sweet Child O Mine, Welcome To The Jungle and Paradise City, as well as covers of Paul McCartney s Live And Let Die, Bob Dylan s Knockin On Heaven s Door and Alice Cooper s Only Women Bleed. The result is a truly exceptional concert that will come as a delight to G N R fans, notably for being a truly mesmerising performance by the classic line-up of the band.
