Gevangen op het strand met hun rug naar de zee, worden ze geconfronteerd met een onmogelijke situatie terwijl de vijand dichterbij komt. Het verhaal speelt zich af op land, zee en in de lucht. RAF Spitfires vallen de vijand aan in de lucht boven het Kanaal en proberen de weerloze mannen beneden te beschermen.
Ondertussen voeren honderden kleine boten, bemand door zowel militairen als burgers, een wanhopige reddingspoging uit, waarbij ze hun leven riskeren in een race tegen de klok om zelfs maar een fractie van hun leger te redden.
