It is the record that, when you play it four years later, takes you straight back to the sound of the radio, of Saturday morning TV, of pub jukeboxes and high-street clothes shops. That album for 1999 is the Vengaboys' The Party Album (who are actually two boys and two girls, but we can gloss over the details). No other record from the year is as generous and giving. Sure, it sticks to a single theme--a simple, beefy, 4x4 bassline, a catchy, quite daft chorus ("the Vengabus is coming" for instance, or "Boom, boom, boom, boom, I want you in my room"), but you know you're not going to get Beethoven when, on the cartoon album sleeve, one of the boys is dressed as a sailor, the other as a Native American.
