In 1984, however, they achieved broader public attention when they were commissioned to write the music for the ITV series Robin Of Sherwood. By now, they had incorporated rock instruments and synthesisers into their music alongside the pipes and bodhrans. The resulting sound may have upset purists, but it made for extremely effective accompaniment to the series' broody, mystical take on the Sherwood legend. The ambient drones of "Herne" (as in Herne The Hunter, the demi-God of the forest whom Robin reveres), "Battles" and the haunting "Darkmere" were a good deal more crucial to the overall atmosphere of the series than one or two of the acting performances and are eminently listenable in their own right. --David Stubbs
