Of course, the most well-known exponent was John Lee Hooker, who joins the many lesser-known blues singers and musicians on this stellar collection who played the low-down bars and released singles on independent labels between the 1940s and 60s. These include Eddie Burns, Detroit Slim, Calvin Frazier, Bobo Jenkins, Baby Boy Warren, Little Sonny, Detroit Count, LC Green, Eddie Kirkland and Henry Smith. The most startling thing about this fascinating set is that I'd not heard of at least half these names until now. It's a real eye-opener discovering this whole other world which operated parallel to the better documented musical enclaves of the time. Special mention must be given to bluesologist Mike Rowe's 48-page illustrated book; awash in illustrations and accounts of this near-forgotten strata of abrasive inner city survival music.
