Nella prima serie, l'anno è il 1909, e fresco di una carriera di successo nel commercio al dettaglio a Chicago, un affascinante Harry Selfridge (Jeremy Piven) arriva a Londra intento a costruire il più grande grande magazzino del mondo nella capitale Oxford Street.

Aiutato dalla sua associazione con la socialite Lady Mae Moxley (Katherine Kelly), Harry ottiene presto il sostegno finanziario necessario per i suoi piani, con il risultato che il negozio viene completato in tempi record.
