„Toy“ wurde im Anschluss an Davids Auftritt im Glastonbury 2000 aufgenommen. Bowie ging mit seiner Band ins Studio, um neue Interpretationen von Songs aufzunehmen, die er erstmals zwischen 1964 und 1971 aufgenommen hatte. Der Plan war, das Album „old school“ live mit der Band aufzunehmen, die besten Takes auszuwählen und es dann so schnell wie möglich zu veröffentlichen. Leider lagen das Konzept der Veröffentlichung des „Surprise Drop“-Albums und die dafür erforderliche Technologie im Jahr 2001 noch einige Jahre in der Zukunft, so dass es zu diesem Zeitpunkt unmöglich war, Toy zu veröffentlichen.
