Nach dem frechen Pop von Damon Albarns Gorillaz-Nebenprojekt und dem offenkundig emotionalen 13 ist dies eine gefühlvolle und subtile Angelegenheit. Hier gibt es ein paar klassische Blur-Rock-Momente: „Crazy Beat“ ist aus dem gleichen Stoff wie der Pogo-Klassiker „Song 2“, während das schmerzhaft kurze, aber brillante „We've Got a File on You“ so klingt Agitprop-Punker Krass im Kampf mit einem marokkanischen Schlangenbeschwörer.
Aber während Damon Albarn immer noch ein Gespür für Melodien hat, klingen Blur wie eine andere Band ohne Coxons Gitarren, die sie untergraben. Marokko und Damons Mali-Musik haben Blur verändert. „Caravan“ verwendet einen schläfrigen Rhythmus, der im Kameltempo voranschreitet, während „Gene by Gene“ Kreuzrhythmen verwendet, die Bilder der Wüste und Klangtexturen aus unorthodoxen Quellen hervorrufen. Blur verwenden jetzt Sounds, um ihre Musik zu erstellen, anstatt die Standard-Rockbesetzung.
