Lowes „The Impossible Bird“ aus dem Jahr 1994 ist ein zurückhaltendes, lockeres Album, das viel mehr mit der Country-Musik von 1956 zu tun hat als mit seinen Punk-Wurzeln aus den 70ern. Dennoch zeichnen sich die 13 Songs – zehn Lowe-Originale und drei Country-Kastanien – durch die Art schnörkelloser Arrangements und unprätentiöser Leidenschaft aus, die Pub-Rock überhaupt erst so besonders gemacht haben. Wenn Lowe eine Ballade wie „The Beast in Me“, „Withered on the Vine“ und „Lover Don’t Go“ singt, sind die Arrangements so minimalistisch – nur ein Hauch von Gitarre und Schlagzeug hinter der Orgel –, dass Das Lied lebt oder stirbt von der Stimme. Glücklicherweise schafft Lowe das schwierige Kunststück, einsam und verzweifelt zu klingen, ohne selbstmitleidig zu klingen. Ob es sich um einen augenzwinkernden Rocker wie „12-Step Program (To Quit You Babe)“ oder eine der vielen Balladen handelt, Lowe trifft ins Schwarze. Die Neuauflage von The Impossible Bird aus dem Jahr 2021 wurde von den Originalbändern neu remastered.
