Dies wird Gruffs siebtes Soloalbum sein. „Seeking New Gods“ wurde nach einer US-Tournee mit seiner Band aufgenommen und in LA mit Superstar-Produzent Mario C (Beastie Boys) gemischt. Das Konzept des Albums war ursprünglich darauf ausgerichtet, die Biographie eines Berges, des Mount Paektu (ein aktiver Vulkan in Ostasien), darzustellen. Als Gruffs Texte jedoch begannen, über die unmenschliche Zeitspanne der Existenz eines Gipfels und die intimen Merkmale nachzudenken, die ihn zum mythologischen Leben erwecken, wurden sowohl die Lieder als auch der Berg immer persönlicher. „Auf dem Album geht es um Menschen und Zivilisationen und die Räume, in denen Menschen im Laufe der Zeit leben. Wie Menschen kommen und gehen, die Geologie jedoch bestehen bleibt und sich langsamer verändert. Ich denke, es geht um Erinnerung und Zeit“, schlägt er über Seeking New Gods vor ' Bedeutung. „Es ist immer noch die Biografie eines Berges, aber jetzt ist es ein Mount Paektu des Geistes.
