Crepuscolo ist das letzte Lied in Ottorino Respighis Liederzyklus Deità silvane („Waldgottheiten“), aber als Albumtitel steht es auch für das Zwielicht all dessen, was Respighi in den Zwischenkriegsjahren repräsentierte, wie verschiedene Strömungen wie Atonalität, stacheliger Neoklassizismus usw Der Futurismus blühte auf. Als Reaktion auf diese Entwicklungen unterzeichnete Respighi 1932 bekanntlich ein Manifest, in dem er Musik mit „menschlichem Inhalt“ forderte – etwas, dem seine Lieder durchaus gerecht werden: Wie Elsa Respighi, die Frau des Komponisten, einmal sagte, seien es seine Lieder, die ihn „ vertraut die verborgenen Geheimnisse seines Herzens an, wenn er seine Seele frei singen lässt.' Von L'ultima ebbrezza, das Respighi komponierte, als er erst 17 Jahre alt war, bis zu den Four Scottish Songs aus dem Jahr 1924 zeugen die hier aufgenommenen Lieder von der Vielfalt seiner musikalischen Interessen, Einflüsse und Stile und sind abwechselnd lyrisch, expressionistisch und impressionistisch oder symbolistisch. Respighis Liebe zur Renaissance zeigt sich auch in den Cinque canti all'antica, Vertonungen von Dichtern wie Boccaccio. Timothy Fallon und Ammiel Bushakevitz haben zuvor ein Liszt-Rezital veröffentlicht, das in Gramophone als „hervorragend“ beschrieben wurde. Sie haben nun ein abwechslungsreiches Programm zusammengestellt, das neben drei kompletten Gruppen auch eine Auswahl einzelner Lieder umfasst, darunter Respighis beliebteste Lieder (Nebbie, Stornellatrice) aber auch weniger bekannte.
