Zu Beginn von Stranger Things: Attack of the Mind Flayer nimmt jeder Spieler ein Charakterplättchen, das jemanden aus der Netflix-Serie „Stranger Things“ darstellt. Sie erhalten außerdem eine Karte, die Ihnen sagt, ob Sie ein gesunder Held oder vom Gedankenschinder besessen sind. Ein Spiel läuft über eine Reihe von Runden und lässt zwei Teams gegeneinander antreten: Sane gegen Possessed. Als Sane-Charakter müssen Sie den Angriffen des Mind Flayer widerstehen, um das Spiel zu gewinnen. Als Besessener-Charakter versucht man, alle Sane-Charaktere vor dem Ende des Spiels in Besessene umzuwandeln oder sie bewusstlos zu machen. Wenn Sie an der Reihe sind, ziehen Sie eine Karte und geben Sie sie einem anderen Spieler, um ihm zu helfen, ihn zu entfernen oder ihn zum Teamwechsel zu bewegen. Wenn am Ende des Spiels noch mindestens ein Sane-Charakter im Spiel ist, gewinnen alle Sane-Charaktere das Spiel. Andernfalls gewinnen die besessenen Charaktere!
