Der Mythos um den thrakischen Königssohn Orpheus diente im Laufe der Jahrhunderte zahlreichen Komponisten, Malern und Regisseuren als künstlerische Inspiration. Im Mittelpunkt der Handlung steht in der Regel die Trauer von Orpheus nach dem Tod seiner Frau Eurydike und seinen Versuchen, sie aus der Unterwelt zu befreien. Die Choreografen Dominique Hervieu und Jos Montalvo, die allgemein für ihre Arbeit in rein musikalischen Kontexten bekannt sind, stellen stattdessen Orpheus in den Mittelpunkt der Geschichte als einen Künstler, der Götter und Sterbliche gleichermaßen mit Witz und Gesang bezaubert und sogar Steine zu Tränen rührt. Orpheus erzählt die Geschichte von Orpheus und Eurydike als modernes Heldenepos: Es ist schnell, mitreißend und voller Überraschungen. Neun Tänzer und sieben Sänger und Instrumentalisten tanzen zu den Klängen von Buschtrommeln vor einer aufwendig gestalteten Kulisse, die einem königlichen Sohn gebührt. Klassischer Gesang verschmilzt mit Popmusik. Hip-Hop und Breakdance treffen auf Orchestermusik. Hervieus und Montalvos „Orpheus“ ist ein fesselndes Werk, das Fans des modernen Tanztheaters einfach lieben werden.
