Johann Sebastian Bach übernahm 1723 die Stelle des Thomaskantors in Leipzig. Zu den unveränderlichen Bräuchen in Leipzig gehörte, dass die hohen Stimmpartien in der Kirchenmusik nicht von Frauen gesungen werden sollten, eine weit verbreitete Konsequenz aus dem Rat des Apostels Paulus. Für die Kirchenmusik, die er in Leipzig aufführte, war Bach für die hohen Stimmen seiner Kantaten und Oratorien auf besonders begabte junge Sänger aus seinem Thomanerchor (dem Chor der städtischen Thomaskirche) angewiesen; Gäbe es für besonders schwierige Solopartien keine entsprechend begabten Knabensolisten im Chor, griff er auf professionelle Sänger zurück, die sich unter Rückgriff auf spezielle Gesangstechniken als „Alt“ oder „Sopran“ ihre Dienste anboten. Der in Israel geborene Altist Zvi Emanuel-Marial tritt heute international auf Festivals und in großen Opernhäusern auf. Seine musikalische Ausbildung begann er als Hornist. Die renommierte Gesangspädagogin Marianne Fischer-Kupfer motivierte ihn zur Ausbildung seiner Stimme im Altregister und übernahm die Leitung seiner Stimmbildung. Im Konzertsaal tritt Zvi Emanuel-Marial regelmäßig mit dem legendären Organisten Matthias Eisenberg auf (Soloprogramme und Oratorien wie Händels Messias, außerdem Solokantaten, Motetten, die Passionen und das Weihnachtsoratorium von JSBach).
