Der Musiker und Lehrer Francesco Durante war zu seiner Zeit so bekannt, dass einer Kompositionsschule (der „Durantisti“) nach ihm benannt wurde. Er komponierte hauptsächlich Vokalmusik, vor allem geistliche, wobei seine Werke für Klavier nur einen begrenzten Teil ausmachen, wo Virtuosität äußerst verbreitet ist; Elemente wie die sehr schnellen Tonleitern, die Arpeggios oder das Kreuzen der Hände sind auch bei anderen Zeitgenossen aus Neapel weit verbreitet, aber sein Schreiben bewahrt charakteristische Merkmale, die absolut persönlich sind. Unter dem Obertitel Toccaten finden sich sowohl Stücke im Improvisationsstil als auch Sonaten und Fugen im italienischen Stil. Die Studii e Divertimenti sind Giacomo Francesco Milano, Prinz von Ardore, einem Adligen und hochbegabten Musiker, der ein Schüler von Durante war, gewidmet und wurden wahrscheinlich auf seine Kosten gedruckt. Der Prinz war auch im Ausland bekannt, insbesondere in Frankreich, wo er mehrere Jahre als Botschafter des Königreichs beider Sizilien lebte. Die Studii e Divertimenti haben eine regelmäßige Struktur, die in den damaligen italienischen Klaviersammlungen nicht üblich ist: Jede Etüde mit ihrer eher strengen kontrapunktischen Struktur und beträchtlichen Dauer wird von einem kurzen Divertimento im gleichen Ton begleitet. „Baldassari spielt mit Flair, Vitalität und Stilverständnis in den Toccaten, den eigenwilligen Fugen und den interessanten Vier Jahreszeiten.“ – Chor & Orgel, 4 STERNE
