Den Showbiz-Veteranen aus der Zeit des Zweiten Weltkriegs, Eddie Sparks (James Caan) und Dixie Leonard (Bette Midler), wird bei einer im Fernsehen übertragenen Zeremonie eine Auszeichnung verliehen. Vor der Show beginnt Dixie, sich an ihre Karriere und die lange Partnerschaft mit Eddie zu erinnern, die 1942 bei einer USO-Weihnachtsshow in London begann. Eddie empfand sofort eine Abneigung gegen sie, aber ihre Wiederholung auf der Bühne kam beim Publikum gut an und so begann eine lange und erfolgreiche Karriere. Dies führte sie durch den Krieg, die McCarthy-Ära und bis zum Vietnamkrieg, aber ihre Beziehung abseits der Bühne änderte sich die ganze Zeit über nicht – Dixie hörte sogar irgendwann auf, mit Eddie zu reden. Auf dieses Wiedersehen zur Preisverleihung freuen sich die beiden also nicht.
