Ferruccio Busoni wurde 1866 in der toskanischen Stadt Empoli geboren. Seine frühreifen musikalischen Fähigkeiten kamen nach der frühen Erziehung durch seine Mutter, eine Pianistin, zum Vorschein. Später erhielt er Lehraufträge in Moskau, Boston und Helsinki, die von besonderer Bedeutung waren, da er dort seine Frau Gerda kennenlernte. Doch erst nach seinem Umzug nach Berlin im Jahr 1894 festigte sich sein Ruf als pianistischer Titan. Tragischerweise wurde er von einer Krankheit heimgesucht und verstarb 1924. Es sind die vorliegenden Werke, die seine Qualitäten am besten zum Ausdruck bringen. Die zwischen 1910 und 1920 komponierten sechs Sonatinen – das umfangreichste Genre in Busonis Spätwerk – umfassen mehr als ein Jahrzehnt des Experimentierens und der Synthese. Stilistisch und rituell werden sie durch Nuit de Noel (1908) und das Album blatter (vollendet 1921) ergänzt. Geboren und ausgebildet in Bukarest, Rumänien, setzte Nicoara sein Studium in London am Royal College of Music fort. Als Solist, Kammermusiker und Komponist ist er vielfach aufgetreten. Er wohnt in Berlin.
