Boccherini schrieb zwei Versionen des Stabat Mater: eine erste im Jahr 1781 für Sopran und Streicher (die auf dieser CD enthaltene) und eine zweite im Jahr 1800 für Sopran, Alt, Tenor und Streicher, die in das Repertoire aufgenommen und entsprechend angefertigt wurde auf eine Anmerkung des Autors zum Manuskriptexemplar des Pariser Konservatoriums, „um die Monotonie einer einzelnen Stimme und zu viel Arbeit für diese einzelne Singstimme zu vermeiden“. Dennoch schreibt er eine Seite aufrichtigen und rein religiösen Gefühls, die im Schlussteil AMEN einen der inspirierendsten Momente seiner kreativen Persönlichkeit berührt.
