Was wir hier haben, ist die willkommene Erinnerung an die Europatournee der Duke Ellington-Band im Jahr 1959 (diese waren praktisch zu jährlichen Veranstaltungen geworden). Der Berliner Sportpalast ist kein Konzertsaal und war während der verfluchten Nazi-Herrschaft oft Schauplatz von Reden Hitlers und seiner Mitverbrecher, aber man kann sagen, dass der Saal zum Zeitpunkt dieses Konzerts gründlich von Jazzklängen gereinigt war. Einige Bemerkungen zum Personal: Eine wichtige neue Stimme in der Trompetensektion war die von Clark Terry, zuvor mit Charlie Barnet und Count Basie, am prominentesten. Mit Duke kam er gut zurecht, verließ ihn aber, nachdem er das Gefühl hatte, dass er außer seinem Hauptdarsteller Perdido kaum etwas zu spielen hatte. Neben Terry ist Andres Merenguito, auch bekannt als Fats Ford, eine nicht solistische, aber wichtige Hauptstimme in der Trompetensektion, die in Louis Armstrongs letzter Big Band mitgewirkt hatte. Glücklicherweise ist die großartige Stimmzungengruppe, eine der großartigsten in der Geschichte des Jazz, intakt – und in großartiger Form.
