Vor siebzig Jahren, am 29. Juli 1951, dirigierte Wilhelm Furtwängler Beethovens Symphonie Nr. 9 bei einem Konzert zur Wiedereröffnung der Bayreuther Festspiele nach sieben Jahren der Stille nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg. Es war ein bedeutsamer Anlass, das Konzert wurde vom Bayerischen Rundfunk übertragen und in die ganze Welt übertragen, unter anderem vom Schwedischen Rundfunk. Unter Verwendung des analogen Monobandes, wie es vom schwedischen Rundfunk digitalisiert wurde, reproduziert die vorliegende CD die Sendung so, wie sie von Hörern in Schweden gehört worden wäre: Wir haben uns dafür entschieden, nichts zu ändern, den Klang nicht „aufzufrischen“, nicht zu bereinigen und zu kürzen die Pausen zu kompensieren oder Publikumsgeräusche in der Musik wegzulassen, aber das Original so zu belassen, wie es war. Auf diese Weise hoffen wir, das Gefühl nachzubilden, als würde man 1951 tatsächlich vor einem alten Radio sitzen und diesem wichtigen Konzert lauschen – einem wahren historischen Dokument.
