Als der sich windende schwarze Schimmel in einem schmuddeligen Lagerhaus in Bayshore, Kalifornien, empfindungsfähig wurde, knarrte und humanoide Gestalt annahm, entstand Blank Square und ihr einzigartig seltsames Punk-Debüt Animal I, das wie das seltsamere Ende von Flesheaters klang, aber mit einer Sterilität, die nur zeitgemäß zu vergleichen ist Total Controls australischer Hardcore-No-Wave und dann mit einer Prise dessen, was DNA und Mars so großartig gemacht hat. Dieses Album ist mit viel Beton und Blech in der Mischung eingefangen und weist dissonante Synkopen auf, als ob es in einem leeren Raum ohne einen Stuhl und definitiv eine nasse Betontreppe hinunter aufgenommen worden wäre. Mit Saxophon und einer sanften, aber manchmal ekelerregenden, plätschernden Slap-Verzögerung kreuzt die Band mit einer Rhythmusgruppe, die so klingt, als hätten sie heute Abend nach dieser eine weitere House-Show zu spielen. An den richtigen Stellen rechteckig, ist es unbequem, als würde man im Auto schlafen. Für Hörer, die Kunst in ihrem Saxofon-Punk lieben und dabei weit in die kalifornische Punk-Geschichte zurückgreifen (SST hätte das zweifellos gemocht). Los geht's, Verrückte.
