Pour 10 morceaux sur Parachutes, il en sort, ajoutant un nouveau sens aux sentiments rock les plus fatigués et surutilisés - amour trouvé, amour perdu, amour non partagé, blesser ceux que vous aimez et la lutte qui est la vie - sur l'acoustique guitares et rock chargé d'émotion. Et pour une fois, tous les clichés sonnent vrai, grâce à Chris Martin qui sonne vraiment comme un homme ramassant les os de sa vie et de son âme, trouvant à parts égales des raisons d'être joyeux et sérieusement déprimé.
Non pas que Parachutes soit un album déprimant ; il y a trop de conviction dans les guitares et d'espoir dans les mots de Martin pour cela. Au lieu de cela, c'est un équilibre magnifiquement tendre qui est aussi proche de la perfection que tout ce qui l'a précédé.
