In den späten Neunzigerjahren trafen sich in der besetzten Szene von East London die beiden Troubadoure und Träumer Peter Doherty und Carl Barat und freundeten sich durch Musik und eine gemeinsame Romantik an. Sie beschlossen, eine Band mit einem Namen zu gründen, der ihre Einstellung widerspiegelte: Ein Wüstling ist jemand, der sich weder durch Konventionen noch durch Moral einschränken lässt. Die Libertines sind geboren.
Ihre Lieder sind zu Hymnen geworden: „What a Waster“, „I Get Along“, „Up the Bracket“, „Boys in the Band“, „Time for Heroes“ und „Don't Look Back into the Sun“. Sie singen und spielen und leben dieses Leben, das an dem bisher unerforschten Punkt auf halbem Weg zwischen dem urbanen Angriff von The Clash und der Erzromantik von The Smiths angesiedelt ist. Das neue Album wird von Mick Jones produziert und von Bill Price (der an Londons Calling und mit Guns n' Roses gearbeitet hat) entwickelt.
