BWM war ein Mann, der einst in den Liedern von Bob Dylan verewigt wurde („Und ich weiß, niemand kann den Blues so singen wie der blinde Willie McTell“) Ende der 1920er Jahre.

McTell war im Wesentlichen ein weitschweifiger Straßenmusiker in Georgia und auf den Straßen von Atlanta. Er spielte mit einer flüssigen, synkopierten Fingerstyle-Gitarrentechnik, obwohl er im Gegensatz zu seinen Zeitgenossen im Piemont fast ausschließlich zwölfsaitige Gitarren spielte.

Er war auch ein versierter Slide-Gitarrist, was unter Ragtime-Bluesmen ungewöhnlich war. Sein Gesangsstil, ein sanfter und oft entspannter Tenor, unterschied sich stark von den härteren Stimmen von Delta-Blues-Männern wie Charley Patton.

Das Material dieser Sammlung wurde 1949 für Atlantic und Regal aufgenommen, obwohl viele dieser Seiten erst im Blues-Revival der späten 60er/frühen 70er Jahre, etwa zwanzig Jahre später, veröffentlicht wurden.
