Bastet war eine im alten Ägypten verehrte Göttin. Ursprünglich wurde sie als Löwinengöttin gefeiert, eine Rolle, die sie mit einer anderen Gottheit namens Sekhmet teilte. Schließlich wurden die beiden Gottheiten als zwei Aspekte derselben Göttin charakterisiert, wobei Sekhmet den kriegerischen Beschützer darstellte und Bastet, der zunehmend als Katze dargestellt wurde, einen sanfteren und fürsorglicheren Aspekt einer Löwin darstellte.
