Dazu gehört die Weiterentwicklung der modalen Harmonien früherer Jahrhunderte ebenso wie die Auseinandersetzung mit Rhythmen außereuropäischer Traditionen. Der Reichtum an Farben in seinen Werken beruht zum Teil auf Messiaens synästhetischer Fähigkeit, Akkorde als verschiedene Formen und Farben wahrzunehmen. Als begeisterter Ornithologe verbrachte er viel Zeit in der Natur, notierte Vogelstimmen und verarbeitete sie dann in stilisierter Form in seinen Kompositionen. Vor allem aber ist Messiaens Werk von seinem tiefen Glauben geprägt. Messiaen sagte einmal über sich selbst, dass er sich nicht in erster Linie als Komponist, sondern als „Ornithologe und Rhythmist“ sehe. Aufgenommen 1991 und 1996, remastered von Original-ORF-Archivbändern.
