Für den siebten Band seines Chopin-Projekts hat der kanadische Pianist und exklusive Chandos-Künstler Louis Lortie ein Programm zusammengestellt, das Werke aus den frühesten bis zu den neuesten Perioden im Leben des Komponisten umfasst, die alle durch ihre Hervorhebung von „Nationalität“ verbunden sind – Italien, Spanien und natürlich Chopins geliebtes Polen. Das Rondo à la Mazur, Op. 5 und das Rondo, Op. 16 sind Beispiele für diese längere Form, die mit dem in den 1820er Jahren populären „brillanten“ Stil des Klaviersatzes verbunden war. Chopin wandte sich bald von diesem Stil ab und suchte nach einem fortschrittlicheren Kompositionsstil. Etwa zur gleichen Zeit wie das Op. komponiert. 16 Rondo, der Boléro, Op. 19 erinnert an die Exotik Spaniens, während die Tarantella Op. 43 spiegelt die Pariser Mode für den süditalienischen Tanz wider, die durch Aubers große Oper „La Muette de Portici“ ausgelöst wurde. Jetzt ist eines seiner berühmtesten Werke, die Polonaise, Op. 53 stellte für Chopin den Höhepunkt seines Projekts dar, das mit den beiden Polonaisen op. 26, um dem Genre eine kraftvolle nationale Symbolik zu verleihen. Diese Werke sind durchsetzt mit vier Sätzen von Mazurkas, Opp. 17, 30, 63 und 68. Chopin führte die Mazurka fast im Alleingang in Paris ein, als er Ende der 1820er Jahre dort ankam, und komponierte sie sein ganzes Leben lang weiter, wodurch die polnische Tanzform zu einigen seiner schillerndsten und einprägsamsten wurde Kompositionen.
