Zu ihm im Studio gesellten sich mehrere befreundete Musiker, die auch bei „All Things Must Pass“ gespielt hatten, und andere wie Jim Keltner, mit dem er 1971 bei den Konzerten von „The Concert for Bangladesh“ zusammengearbeitet hatte. Das Album und seine Lead-Single „Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)“ erreichten beide Platz eins in Amerika und in den Charts auf der ganzen Welt. Die spirituelle Natur von Living In The Material World, die der Rolling Stone als „wunderbar in ihrer Ausstrahlung“ beschreibt, spiegelt sich auch in der Einbeziehung einer Illustration aus der Bhagavad-Gita in das Kunstwerk wider.
