1973 etablierte sich Sun Ra als wichtige, wenn auch sehr seltsame Präsenz in der Jazzszene. Seine Arkestra waren seit den 1950er-Jahren in verschiedenen Formen tätig und hatten Aufnahmen gemacht, doch ihre Übernahme durch die aufkommende Gegenkultur in den späten 1960er-Jahren hatte ihnen neue Popularitätsniveaus verschafft. Künstler, Dichter, Filmemacher und Rockmusiker fühlten sich alle von Ras außerirdischen Klängen und Bildern angezogen. Im Jahr 1973 war Ra 60 Jahre alt und nahm es locker hin. Mit den herausragenden Solisten John Gilmour und Marshall Allen an der Spitze, Sängern, Tänzern und einer psychedelischen Lichtshow, die eine Rückprojektion seines kürzlich veröffentlichten Spielfilms Space Is The Place (1972) beinhaltete, war Sun Ra bereit, diesen Planeten und alle anderen in der Nähe zu erobern .
