Mit zwei bahnbrechenden Veröffentlichungen, „Something Else!!!!“ aus dem Jahr 1958. „The Music of Ornette Coleman“ und „Tomorrow Is the Question!“ aus dem Jahr 1959. Die neue Musik von Ornette Coleman. Diese Alben machten einen unbekannten Jazz-Visionär aus dem Hinterland zum Gesprächsthema der New Yorker Szene. Mit Colemans Arbeitsband mit Don Cherry an der Trompete, dem Pianisten Walter Norris, dem Bassisten Don Payne und dem Schlagzeuger Billy Higgins ist das Album „Something Else!!!!“ klingt heute weniger radikal als eher auffallend individuell und bluesdurchtränkt. Mit neun Coleman-Originalen stellte die Session mehrere Melodien vor, die zu Standards wurden, darunter „The Blessing“ und „When Will the Blues Leave?“.
