Er überlebte, teilweise dank der Manifestation seiner mutierten Fähigkeit, Magnetfelder zu kontrollieren. Nach dem Krieg beschloss er, dass ein solches Schicksal den Mutanten niemals widerfahren würde. Als kompromissloser Freiheitskämpfer für seine Mutantenkollegen trieb sein extremer Glaube an die Überlegenheit der Mutanten einen Keil zwischen Magneto und seinem engen Freund, Professor Xavier. Magnetos Vision für die Mutantenart veranlasste ihn, die Bruderschaft der Mutanten zu gründen, die um die Vorherrschaft der Mutanten kämpft.
Mortimer Toynbee, bekannt als Toad, ist ein genetisch fehlerhafter Mutant. Er war seit seiner Geburt sichtbar mutiert und wurde von seinen Eltern in einem Waisenhaus ausgesetzt, wo er wegen seines Aussehens geächtet wurde. Als Magneto ihn entdeckte und rekrutierte, beschloss Toad, die Menschheit zu besiegen, die ihn abgelehnt und erniedrigt hatte. Toad dient Magneto als bedingungsloser Lakai und nutzt seine mutierten Fähigkeiten wie verbessertes Springen und Greifzunge
