Action-Blockbuster von Marvel Comics, in dem der Wissenschaftler Dr. Bruce Banner (Edward Norton) nach dem Heilmittel für sein lebensveränderndes Alter Ego sucht. Auf der Suche nach dem Gegenmittel, das ihn davon abhält, sich in den Hulk zu verwandeln, ist Banner (Norton) gezwungen, sich bedeckt zu halten, damit die Militärbehörden, die seine Kräfte ausnutzen wollen, ihn nicht einholen. Ironischerweise sehnt er sich danach, mit der einzigen Frau zusammen zu sein, die er jemals geliebt hat, Betty Ross (Liv Tyler), die zufällig die Tochter seines wichtigsten Militärgegners, General Thaddeus „Thunderbolt“ Ross (William Hurt), ist. Nachdem er sich schließlich dazu entschlossen hat, in die Zivilisation zurückzukehren, entdeckt Banner, dass es einen noch größeren und gefährlicheren Feind gibt – The Abomination (Tim Roth). Dieser neue Feind, ein noch mächtigeres Urtier als der Hulk, ist das Ergebnis der Einwirkung eines fremden Agenten auf eine noch größere Dosis der Strahlung, die den Hulk erschaffen hat, und kann nicht in die menschliche Gestalt zurückkehren. Jetzt ist die Bühne für den gigantischen Kampf der beiden Schwergewichte bereitet, wobei New York der Schauplatz für den ultimativen Showdown ist.
