Die Operette „Waldmeister“ von Johann Strauss II. wurde im Dezember 1895 uraufgeführt. Die Handlung – eine Verwechslung, die ein wenig an „Die Fledermaus“ erinnert – ist lebhaft, das Libretto selbst erwies sich jedoch als wenig zufriedenstellend. Die lebhafte und makellos orchestrierte Musik mit mehreren Stücken, die später berühmt werden sollten, darunter der Walzer Trau, Schau, Wem und die Polka Klipp-Klapp-Galopp, brachte Strauss jedoch große Bewunderung ein. Am Eröffnungsabend mit Johannes Brahms war Wiens führender Kritiker Eduard Hanslick anwesend, der das neue Werk mit der Aussage lobte, dass „Mozarts goldener Klang in [Strauss‘] Orchester herrscht“.
