Josef Schelb (1894–1977) ist eines der besser gehüteten Geheimnisse der deutschen Musik. Sein Schaffen war beachtlich: Bei einem Bombenangriff im Jahr 1942 verlor er den größten Teil seiner frühen Musik, aber um die verlorene Zeit auszugleichen, schrieb er danach etwa 150 weitere Werke in der tonal befreiten, quasi-expressionistischen kontrapunktischen Tradition Hindemiths und Hartmann; Auch Bartk war ein wichtiger Einflussfaktor. Diese drei Konzerte zeigen ihn von seiner einnehmendsten Seite: Die kontrapunktische Kunstfertigkeit, die die Musik vorantreibt, wird mit leichtem und flinkem Touch eingesetzt, und Passagen von rührender Zartheit stehen im Kontrast zu anderen, in denen ein lebhafter Sinn für Humor an die Oberfläche sprudelt.
