Brahms hatte bereits beschlossen, sich als Komponist zurückzuziehen, als er 1891 auf einer Reise nach Meiningen vom wunderschönen Spiel des Klarinettisten Richard Mühlfeld inspiriert und herausgefordert wurde. Die beiden Sonaten, Op. 120 sind Teil einer späten Blütezeit, die einige der besten Kammermusikwerke von Brahms hervorbrachte. Brahms selbst erforschte diese Stücke über die Klarinette hinaus, und die Arrangements von Karl-Heinz Schütz basieren auf den alternativen Versionen des Komponisten und suchten nach dem Ideal zweier gleichberechtigter Instrumente im ständigen Dialog. Außerdem ist eine Auswahl von Liedern ohne Text enthalten, die das Flötenrepertoire um Arrangements dieser beliebten Lieder erweitern.
