The first recording featuring the choral music of Paul Fisher, together with first recordings of some recent organ works.
Paul Fisher's music has an immediately approachable melodic quality, allied with a masterful technical control, producing music of quality and lasting worth.
This selection of his choral music includes his Evening canticles setting for Bradford Cathedral, movements from his large-scale requiem, Black light, and a group of varied anthems.
Paul Fisher was born in 1943 and spent his childhood in Bewdley,on the River Severn, north Worcestershire, UK. He was educated at Bromsgrove School, and took degrees in Classics and Theology at Oxford and Birmingham Universities. After parish work in Redditch, Worcestershire, he became Chaplain at Manchester University. From 1979 until 2000 Paul served as a church adult educator and trainer, together with parish work, in Cumbria, south London and North Surrey. Paul took his piano teaching and performance diplomas at the Birmingham School of Music and the Royal College of Music in 1973, starting serious attempts at organ playing and composition in the early 1990s. He has studied with Stephen Layton, Anne Marsden Thomas, Gerard Brooks, and Kevin Bowyer. He is still learning to play and compose, all too aware that every performance and work, although striving for the best possible, is provisional.
Paul began to compose for choir and solo voice during his time as a Bass Lay-Clerk in Bradford Cathedral from 2003 to 2008. Many of his thirty and more organ works, including a substantial organ symphony, have been professionally recorded in Blackburn Cathedral and Glasgow University by Kevin Bowyer. His Scherzo has also been recorded at Bridlington Priory by Paul Walton on the Regent label (REGCD483).
Paul took early retirement in 2000 to allow more time for musical composition and performance, and moved to the Yorkshire Dales with his wife Sue.
The Proteus ensemble was founded by Stephen Shellard in 2013 and consists of professional singers drawn from all parts of the UK.Named after the Greek sea-god Proteus, the group takes its musical raison d etre from the adjective protean which means versatile or capable of assuming many forms .
