Grand Delusion, the latest LP from American-born, Austria-based musician and songwriter Matt Boroff, is a hauntingly beautiful album that plunges listeners into fully realized worlds that are cinematic in scope. Grand Delusion was recorded at 11AD studios in Hollywood, California, and features such prominent contributors as producer/multi-instrumentalist Alain Johannes (QOTSA, PJ Harvey, Them Crooked Vultures, Desert Sessions), drummer Jack Irons (RHCP, Pearl Jam) and vocalist Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees, QOTSA). The intoxicating moodscapes that Boroff unveils on Grand Delusion resound with a brooding intensity present from the very first note. Originally a veteran of desert rock, the musician defies easy categorization in order to pursue his own path, but the familiar desert wind continues to moan in the distance. Pulsating grooves, screaming guitars and flickering organ notes provide the perfect instrumentation for Boroff s distinct baritone, which is sometimes smoky, other times pleading, but always unmistakably cool.
