Stanley Kramer's powerful courtroom drama, based on Abby Mann's television play, delves into the moral complexities of post-World War II justice. Judge Dan Haywood (Spencer Tracy) is sent to Germany to preside over the trial of Nazi officials, including Ernst Janning (Burt Lancaster). As the prosecution presents evidence of war crimes and atrocities, defense counsel Hans Rolfe (Maximilian Schell) argues that trying Nazi officers for following orders is akin to judging an entire nation. This thought-provoking film explores themes of responsibility, morality, and the aftermath of war.
