Review THIS IS a real Yardbirds bonanza - a limited-edition box set made up of four CDs and a DVD, with much of the richly- dynamic material being commercially released for the first time. Furnished in excellent sound quality, the CDs carry a total of 70 tracks and have an overall running time of nearly three and a half hours in the course of which they purvey a succession of characteristically galvanising Yardbirds songs and instrumentals. The icing on a delicious cake is the hour-long DVD that presents 21 performances in authentically vintage black-and-white footage. In a package mainly drawn from appearances on British, French, German and Swedish television and radio, the treasure trove includes performances that only the most fervent devotees would have known existed. And not many of those hard-core fans would have been aware of their availability for current-day delectation. A wealth of music affords a comprehensive celebration of the Yardbirds' journey - from their blueswailin' origins, to their exciting 'rave-up' crescendos, and through to some heavy-duty psychedelia. All of the renditions are delivered in a terrific raw immediacy. The collection incorporates many of the Yardbirds' classic hits and celebrated album tracks - some of them obviously heard more than once - alongside some lesser-known titles.
