Besatzungsmitglied Andrew Braddock (York) überlebt den Untergang des Segelschiffs The Lady Vain. Nach mehreren Tagen auf See in einem Rettungsboot erreicht er die Küste einer Insel, die vom mysteriösen Wissenschaftler Dr. Moreau (Lancaster) regiert wird.
Obwohl Braddock von Moreau als Ehrengast begrüßt wird, empfindet er den Kontakt zu den Eingeborenen als zunehmend beunruhigend, da sie anders sind als alle anderen Männer, die er jemals zuvor gesehen hat.
