One of the nation’s most beloved stars of stage and screen, Sheridan Smith will further explore her remarkable vocal gift when she releases her debut album ‘Sheridan: The Album’.
The album features Sheridan’s interpretation of a wide range of timeless classics which are the perfect match for her soaring voice. At the heart of this eclectic collection are a number of standout tracks from family favourite musicals, such as ‘City of Stars’ from ‘La La Land’, a confessional take ‘And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going’ from ‘Dreamgirls’ and ‘For Forever’ from the contemporary Broadway smash ‘Dear Evan Hansen’. Yet Sheridan also possesses the talent to reimagine big pop hits as hazy, late-night torch songs.
It’s a skill that’s particularly evident in the album opener ‘Crazy’ – an imaginative choice of Gnarls Barkley’s record-breaking smash rather than the Patsy Cline country standard – and ‘Addicted To Love’, which has the attitude of Florence + The Machine’s version rather than Robert Palmer’s original.
There is also the song that reflected a key role from Sheridan’s acting career. She previously performed Cilla Black’s ‘Anyone Who Had A Heart’ in the 2014 mini-series ‘Cilla’, which earned her a National Television Award for Best Drama Performance. The album project commenced in a time-honored fashion when Sheridan and producer Tris Penna (who also worked with her on the ‘Funny Girl’ cast recording) ran through a long list of potential songs by testing them with stripped-back vocal and piano performances.
With Sheridan involved at every step, they gradually constructed a set of songs that all feel as if they had been written specifically for her. The pair were joined by co-producer, arranger, and musical director Steve Sidwell, whose previous credits include orchestration and conducting on George Michael’s ‘Symphonica’ tour and live album, and Robbie Williams’ ‘Swing When You’re Winning’ and ‘Swings Both Ways’ albums.
The trio assembled a team of London’s finest performers, the majority of whom appear on every single one of the album’s twelve tracks. The result is an album that flows with the dynamic of a live performance.
