Mike Seeger was one of the founding members of the legendary folk and old-time music trio the New Lost City Ramblers. The group's importance to the folk revival of the late 1950s and 1960s cannot be underestimated. What they played proved that it was possible for younger musicians to recreate music heard originally on the scratchy old pre-WW2 78-rpm records. The NLCR were also instrumental in locating and rediscovering many old time music legends and, where they were still musically active, bringing them to play at clubs and festivals and giving them new stages for their own music. Vanguard Records was one of the most influential record labels of the 1960s and early 70s, founded in 1950 by Seymour and Maynard Solomon. It established itself releasing some of the very best recordings in the jazz, classical and folk fields. It captured the fledgling folk revival scene as it emerged in the late 1950s and through the 1960s. In 1964, Vanguard released this solo album by Mike Seeger. On this eponymously titled set, Seeger accompanies himself on guitar, banjo, dulcimore (sic), fiddle, autoharp and French harp (or harmonica) with brief guitar support from Marge Seeger. The sparse-sounding project was unusual even by the standards of the day and it has become a cult folk record (as well as much-loved by many on the Americana and country music scenes) but, until this CD release, remained one of the glaring omissions to any Mike Seeger discography. The booklet to this CD release features the original cover artwork, original sleevenotes by D K Wilgus and an additional note by John Crosby. The original 15 tracks are included here in the best quality sound. No additional material was recorded for this session so the music included in the album is a reissue of the original LP vinyl release.
